Stenger Test – Hearing Test 6
The key terms of Hearing test 6 include, Stenger Test.
Stenger test
Sound is audible in both ears but the patient is only aware of it on the left ear where the SL is higher, called the stenger effect
so basically when a sound is presented to both ears the listener is aware of its presence only in the ear where it has a higher sensation level
When can stenger be used?
Positive test
negative test
Positive= faking, functional hearing loss
negative= not faking
need to have a 25 dB difference between ears
Psychogenic
Loss arising from psycho conditions
aka hysterical deafness
Non-organic hearing loss can be suspected when
Referral source is sketch
exaggerated behavior
threshold variability
disagreement in SRT/PTA more than 12 dB apart
lack of crossover
odd results
Behavioral tests for non-organic hearing loss
Ascending descending gap test
Stenger test
delayed auditory feedback tests
varying intensity story test
variable intensity pulse count method
yes-no method
Utricle senses
Straight line horizontal movement
Saccule senses
Straight line vertical movement
Stria vascularis
Supplies blood and nutrients to the organ of corti
Scala media has what fluid
Endolymph
Two sacs of the vestibular system
and what are they filled with
Utricle
saccule
endolymph
Semicircular canals sense
Rotation
one for each plane of movement
Symptoms of vestibular disturbance
Vertigo
nystagmus
anxiety
rapid heart rate
nausea and vomiting
Nystagmus
Involuntary rhythmic eye movement
– Usual
