Animal Like Protists, White Blood Cells, Strep Throat, Antibodies – Quiz 5

The key terms of this Biology chapter include Immune System, Defenders, Invaders, Antibodies, White Blood Cells, Antibodies, Disease, Bacteria, Virus, Fungi, Protists, Biology Quiz

Defenders

immune system defends bodies in two ways.

white blood cells
antibodies

white blood cells

releases WBC
WBC engulfs invader
WBC’s lysosome releases pus
WBC kills any damaged body cells
healthy cells remain

antibodies

antibodies are large molecules that lock onto
invading organisms
made of a special type of WBC
invading cells have distinctive markers or
molecules on their cell membranes
markers are a special shape
antibodies are designed as the opposite shape
so they fit together like a lock and key
each type of antibody works on only one type of invader

What are invaders?

the invasion of a disease is a infection.

Bacteria

helpful bacteria, numerous disease caused by bacteria, ( strep throat- tetanus-pneumonia )

fungi

several human diseases caused by fungi eg; athletes foot

protists

– malaria caused by animal-like protists called plasmodium transmitted by mosquitos
-beaver fever 9( caused by giardia lamblia ) transmitted by drinking untreated water

viruses

viruses are not living things !! they arent true cells
– no nucleus, no cytoplasm, no organelles, no cell membrane
a virus is a small strand of genetic information covered by a protein coat.
– active once they invade living cell
– take over cell and gets made into a virus making factory eg; cold sores, common cold, influenza. AIDS/HIV
